Updates on Java PDF Viewer roadmap from IDRsolutions

58 sec read

SwingViewerMy previous blog post (5 changes we are considering in 2016 for IDRsolutions), generated lots of feedback for us (for which we would like to say thank-you). The item on Java PDF viewers generated the most comments. We have considered all the feedback and would like to provide our amended plans here.

Again your feedback is welcomed….

In 2016 we find that there are some things that JavaFX still cannot do as well as Swing (and it now looks like it will never do). In additional, the repositioning of JavaFX makes it a very useful complementary technology and often an alternative, but not a total replacement for Swing. JavaFX also now looks less attractive as a GUI for embedded devices.

Taking all this into account, we now offer.

Viewer

A combined JavaFX/Swing Viewer which uses both technologies to provide the best possible solution. We have exciting plans for additional features in 2016/2017 using both Swing and JavaFX. This is our recommended solution for users.

ViewerFX

We did look at building a pure JavaFX solution which has less features (no printing and less display modes) as an alternative for customers who need a pure JavaFX solution. JavaFX does not support all the features we needed for a complete solution (especially the right mix of speed/quality for multi-page display). We have also found no commercial demand for this product which would cover the costs to develop and maintain. And Oracle is moving away from JavaFX. So it is no longer an option from us.

I hope that makes sense and I would welcome your feedback or questions via email or in reply to this post.
