What Image, Video and Audio formats are supported in your Web Browser

Screengrab from the website Can I use

There are many different formats when it comes to image, video, and audio. Some of these formats are supported whilst others are not. It can be difficult to figure out which category a format falls under, which is why we have created this small blog post that you can bookmark and use to understand which formats are supported.

Image

Bmp, Heic, Jpeg2000 and JPEG-XL are not supported.

Tif only has support on safari on Mac but not any other browsers.

Video

.mov is the default for Mac users however it is not supported.

Audio

AAC is not supported.

If you are still unsure then you can use this tool: Can I use. It is great if you want to double check a format and where it is supported. This tool allows you to enter any format, e.g Heic or Tiff, and view in which browser and what version of the browser it is supported in. Plus the tool is free to use!

If you want to find out how to handle unsupported formats you can check out are article here: https://blog.idrsolutions.com/how-to-handle-unsupported-image-video-and-audio-formats-in-your-web-applications/
