Top strategies for Employee Retention

The secret to employee retention

One of our secrets to maintaining a high retention rate is by hiring placement students. By hiring talented students for placements, we are exposed to new perspectives and energy. We spend the year working hard, especially on training days, whilst they decide if we are a good fit for them and we decide if they are also a good match for us.

These students often return to us as full-time employees after their studies, contributing to our high retention rate. One of them has been with us for 18 years! This approach not only supports young talent but also ensures we have a pipeline of dedicated, well-trained employees.

Practical steps to improve retention rate

Our high employee retention rate at IDR Solutions is a key indicator of a healthy workplace culture. Improving employee retention involves creating a supportive and engaging work environment.

Offer benefits that align with your company culture and provide development opportunities. Maintain open communication to create transparency and encourage feedback.

Promote work-life balance with flexible working arrangements and consider acting on employee suggestions to boost job satisfaction. It is also important to encourage desired behaviours and clarify expectations to establish a clear company culture.

Jobs to Be Done framework

Bob Moesta’s Jobs-to-Be-Done (JTBD) framework promotes employee retention by focusing on understanding our team’s motivators and needs that drive employee behaviour. By identifying what “jobs” employees are trying to accomplish in their professional and personal lives, employers can tailor roles, development opportunities and workplace conditions to better align with these needs.

This approach ensures that everyone in our team feels supported in their role. This leads to higher job satisfaction, increased engagement and improved retention rates.

Understanding why people leave

People stay where they get flexibility and the chance to grow and learn. Growth does not need to be a new job title – at IDR solutions people grow in ownership and authority (as well as confidence). Create a supportive environment and provide personal and professional development opportunities to prevent uncertainty.

One of our favourite development opportunities is the SYSTM startup growth programme and at IDR Solutions we take our training days very seriously so our work-life balance is great!

The benefits of some turnover

Some turnover is beneficial as it brings fresh perspectives and new skills, promoting innovation and preventing stagnation. It creates opportunities for existing employees to advance and keeps the workforce dynamic and competitive. Lastly, remember that if some people do outgrow the company and leave, it’s a sign that you are running an organisation which is developing and growing its team.
